Manufactured by Eli Lilly, Zyprexa was released in
1996 for use in treating schizophrenia and acute mania associated
with bipolar disorders. Zyprexa is a member of the psychotropics
category of medications that affect the mind. It is believed that
Zyprexa works by balancing the chemicals in the brain to allow
a greater state of normalcy for those using this prescribed drug.
Unfortunately, Zyprexa also carries some potentially dangerous side
effects. These can include:
Hyperglycemia: high glucose (sugar) levels in the
blood
Diabetes: insufficient levels of insulin in the
blood
Ketoacidosis: high glucose (sugar) levels in the
blood often caused by illness or lack of insulin
The consumer group, Public Citizen, has stated they believe Eli
Lilly has done too little in warning the public about the dangerous
possibly side effects of using Zyprexa and are asking the United
States Food and Drug Administration to issue stronger warnings.
