What is Vioxx?
Vioxx is a COX-2 inhibitor used primarily for the relief of pain associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Other COX2 inhibitors, like Celebrex and Bextra, have not been withdrawn. Vioxx works by reducing the cause of inflammation, pain, and fever in the body. It has also been used to treat painful menstrual cramps.
What are the adverse side effects associated with taking Vioxx?
Despite Merck’s assertion that it was safe, Vioxx has been linked to possible severe cardiovascular side effects including heart attacks, strokes, blood clots and can lead to kidney failure. Additional side effects can include:
abdominal pain, tenderness, or discomfort
nausea
blood in vomit
bloody, black, or tarry stools
unexplained weight gain
swelling or water retention
fatigue or lethargy
skin rash, itching
yellowing of skin or eyes
flu-like symptoms
unusual bruising or bleeding
What other drugs are similar to Vioxx? Vioxx is in the same category of over-the-counter NSAIDs as aspirin, ibuprofen and naproxen. None of these have similar side effects as Vioxx. Bextra and Celebrex are also COX-2 inhibitors and both may have very similar side effects.
What should I do if I am taking Vioxx?
Contact your prescribing doctor immediately. Studies have shown that patients taking Vioxx over an extended period of time are at twice the risk for heart attack and stroke, in addition to other cardiovascular events. Your doctor may be able to prescribe an alternative treatment based on your specific symptoms and needs.
