Brought on the market in 1995 by Pfizer, the drug Neurontin was originally approved by the FDA for use in controlling epileptic seizures, in conjunction with another drug. Almost immediately, Neurontin was promoted for “off-label” use – use for problems not approved by the FDA.
Promoting "off-label" use is illegal and Pfizer is currently being investigated for the promotion of "off-label" use by the attorney general of numerous states. Recent lawsuits against Pfizer reveal that it paid physicians thousands of dollars to prescribe Neurontin for "off-label" uses based on questionable research.
